Don’t Assume That People Are Best Friends

While everyone might get along really well, this isn’t the same as being friends outside of work. That’s why your corporate function shouldn’t involve the kind of things that you’d normally do with a group of friends.

Going for dinner and drinks with your mates might be an ideal night out, but doing the same with your colleagues can quickly get awkward and stale when you run out of things to talk about. This can then lead to people drinking too much, which can turn a boring situation into a rowdy one, which is the worst of all possible worlds.

Incorporating some kind of activity is a great idea. Not only does it give people something to do, but it can also help to break the ice and give people something to bond over and talk about.

Don’t Choose The Wrong Activity

While incorporating an activity is definitely the way to go, it’s important to choose something that everyone can enjoy. The idea of a workplace event is to bring everyone closer together, so the last thing you want is for the activity/event to be the cause of discontent and division.

If you’re planning things, don’t just think about what you’d like to do. Take a step back and consider everyone you work with. Are they all going to enjoy running around and getting pelted with high-velocity paintballs as much as you do? Probably not.

Don’t Be Stingy With The Food & Drink

Ever heard the phrase “eat, drink and be merry”? There’s a reason that it’s become well known: eating and drinking good stuff makes people happy. That’s why it’s super important not to be stingy when it comes to the food and drink at your workplace event.

This applies to both the quality and quantity of what you provide. Nobody wants to fight over a tiny amount of great food and drinks, but at the same time, they don’t want to be provided with a mountain of cheap and nasty junk food.

Feeding and watering your staff well at your corporate function shows that you really value the work that they do. That doesn’t mean that you have to break the bank, but putting a little bit of thought and effort into things will go a long way.

Don’t Make It All About Drinking

Being generous with the food and drink at your work function is important, but it’s also important to strike the right balance between the two. Sure, you want everyone to get stuck in and enjoy themselves, but you don’t want people to overdo it and embarrass themselves.

Also, not everyone is into drinking, so if that’s what your event is all about then you’re going to be alienating some people. Remember what we said earlier about choosing an activity that everyone can enjoy? That also applies to hitting the sauce.

Don’t Take It On If You’re Not Ready For It

Believe it or not, throwing a kick-ass work do actually takes a lot of skill, planning, organisation, judgement and expertise. Not everybody is great at it, and not every workplace has someone capable of bringing it all together and making sure that the event is a success (or, at a bare minimum, not an unmitigated disaster!).
