South Beach Sunset Markets

Sometimes it really does take the perspective of an outsider to make you realize how good you have it at home. This was definitely the case for us when we had a friend from New York come and visit recently. After a swim at Leighton beach, brunch at Bib & Tucker (with a cheeky mimosa or two of course!) and a beer at Little Creatures on a gorgeous sunny day he remarked how utterly perfect it had been. “I don’t know about that,” came my reply, “it’s a little windy today.”

All jokes aside, viewing our lifestyle through the fresh (if not somewhat jealous) perspective of a visitor really did make me think about how fantastic it is. We have the perfect balance of great weather, stunning beaches, amazing food and a relaxed, laid-back pace of life. If you’re looking for a perfect example of this you really can’t go past the South Beach Sunset Markets in Fremantle.

Held on the grassy area behind South Beach every Saturday evening in summer, they’re the prefect illustration of the aforementioned weather, beaches, food and relaxation all combined into one. Head down before sunset for a refreshing dip in the ocean and then set up your blanket, crack a beer or a bottle of wine and then get stuck into the large selection of fantastic food stalls while you enjoy the live music. Our favourites are the Israeli Shakshuka, Moroccan meatballs/curries, Jamaican jerk chicken and curry goat, Vietnamese rice vermicelli salad and Japanese gyoza, but there are loads more to choose from so you’ll definitely find something to tickle your taste buds.

The summery weather is drawing to a close though folks, so there can’t be many more left for this season. Our advice is to round up a group of friends and get yourself down there next Saturday night to make sure you don’t miss out.
